Direct Mail Marketing Services

Overview

The postnet barcode was developed by the United States Postal Service to provide a system of encoding zip code information on mailpieces so they can be read reliably by relatively inexpensive barcode sorters.

The barcode is made of binary elements printed on the mailpieces as tall and short bars representing the zip code or zip + 4 code.

If your mail is not readable on the postal optical character readers (OCR's) and does not have barcodes, it requires mechanized or even manual processing.

If your mail is readable, it first passes through the OCR which converts the numeric code to a barcode. Then it goes to a barcode sorter (BCS) which reads only the barcode and sorts the mail to its final destination.

Now, if your mail is already barcoded it skips the initial postal service processing steps altogether and goes straight to the barcode sorter -- saving you the postal service time and money.

To qualify for reduced postal rates, all cards and letters in an automation rate mailing must be 100% delivery pointed barcoded.

What is a Delivery Point Bar Code?

Delivery point barcodes take you door to door. By adding 10 bars to a standard zip +4 barcode, your mail will be processed faster at the post office. That is because the delivery point barcode includes additional mail address information so barcode sorters can arrange mail in the exact order of delivery. And that results in better mail delivery every time.

Getting Started

To qualify for automation based discounts, barcoded mail must meet specific quality standards for proper processing on automated postal equipment. Therefore, when designing a mailpiece it is imperative to review the general eligibility requirements for automation based mail. The physical characteristics of the mailpiece -- length, height, thickness, aspect ratio, shape and weight -- initially will determine whether a mailpiece is machineable.

Unless the mailpiece is a sealed envelope, it will be necessary to secure it through the use of tabs, wafer-seals, tape or glue.

Clasps, staples, string, buttons or similar protrusions that may impede or damage mail processing equipment must not be used on mailpieces.

How Much is a Valid Address Worth to Your Company?

The postal service estimates that 18% of presorted standard mail (bulk-rate)does not get delivered due to insufficient, inaccurate addresses, so your aging prospect database could be costing you thousands in lost business opportunities (not to mention the costs to prepare, print and apply postage to your mailings).

Your database is a strategic corporate asset. Fortunately, the Address List Coding Process guarantees the protection of this investment.

Jedidiah Press can accept your mailing list on a floppy diskette, 9-track tape or hard copy. Once loaded on our computer system, we will perform the Address List Coding Process on your database so that you can start taking full advantage of barcoded savings.
